The Thar Desert is located in Western India and forms a border with South Eastern Pakistan. There is a lot of controversy about the origin of this desert, there are conflicting reports about the time when this place turned arid, some reports suggest around the 2000 to 1500 B.C.
The Thar Desert covers 2, 59,000 sq km area.
There is a wide variety of topography in the Thar Desert, ranging from gravel, hillocks, salt marshes, sand dunes and lakes. The Aravali Range is the main landmark situated to the south west of the Thar Desert and this prevents the Thar Desert from extending to the eastern side of India.
There is proof that the Indus civilization existed here approximately 4500 years ago and was part of this Desert. The traders used to travel across this sea of sand using the ship of the desert Camel. With the routes chalked out the traders setup places for rest on the way know as Sarai (rest house) which slowly and steadily turned into settlements over a period of time.
The Thar Desert has a vast and constantly changing environment, which is one of the most inhospitable places on the face of the earth.
There is constant shift in the landscape as the sandstorms and the wind keep on rearranging the terrain.
The three principal towns of Thar Desert are Jaisalmer, Bikaner and Jodhpur. The town of Jaisalmer is the starting points of many a safari in to Thar Desert.
